Cat Grooming

Cats generally groom themselves, right!? In many cases, yes, however, many cats, such as long-haired and senior cats require additional support to stay clean and/or free of knots. We also see lots of cats whose owners have found out how fun it is(n't) to bathe cats at home!

Cats have a unique response to grooming and each visit may present different challenges. Simply put, cats are a lot less predictable than dogs and this can impact the quality of the groom, or even our ability to perform any services for your cat. If this is your first visit with us, please review our policies (below the packages) prior to booking your first cat grooming appointment. We are happy to answer any questions you may have along the way.

Please note all services are by appointment only. Request an appointment here

Cat Grooming Policies

General Information

Cat grooming is provided to the best of our ability based on your cat's individual response to grooming, determined as eligibility. In short: good cats are eligible for most services, reasonably good cats may be eligible for some services, and difficult cats are eligible for few or no services. Please keep in mind that their response to grooming and handling at home may not indicate their response at our salon. This can go both ways; we have cats that are angels at home yet we cannot perform any services on them, and we have cats that won't let anyone touch them at home yet we can perform a full wet bath or lion cut with near perfect behaviour. Every pet is different and every situation is different.

While every effort is made to make an educated decision on eligility prior to starting services, it's important to note that an appointment will be stopped, and your cat rejected for further services, at any time where the safety of your cat or their groomer are at risk. Payment for work completed will be required.

Bathing

It is important that you read and understand the general information section prior to booking an appointment.

Wet Bathing

Small tests are run to determine your cats eligibilty for wet bathing. We introduce your cat to our bathing area, tub, a small amount of water and lastly, the blow dryer. If they demonstrate a reasonable amount of comfort at each stage, we are typically able to proceed with a wet bath. Long-haired cats have a higher probability of leaving slightly damp in some areas (typically face/neck) if they become highly resistant to the dryer in those spots. As much as we tend to think cats don't like water, and that's often true, we find they often really don't like the sounds and feel of our dryers as they are louder and move more air than a typical home hair dryer.

Dry/Waterless Bathing

If your cat is not eligible for a wet bath, dry bathing may be an option. We use products specificaly designed to help clean fur and skin without the need for water or salon dryers. These safe solutions are applied to your cat's coat, thoroughly combed through and towel dried.

Lion Cuts

It is important that you read and understand the general information section prior to booking an appointment.

For safety reasons, lion cuts are the only haircut we offer to new cats and cats with lower behaviour ratings. Cats regularly demonstrating positive behaviour may become eligilble for longer styles at future appointments.

A Lion Cut is a short shave of your cat's body, leaving a mane around their head and neck (mane lengths vary). Legs are typically shaved from the shoulder to the elbow, leaving little "boots". Tail options are shaved with a ball of fur on the end, shave up a few inches from the base of their tail (bum) to help with sanitary conditions, or to leave the tail as-is (untouched). A nail trim is included, and your cat receives a dry/waterless bath. Dry baths are offered initially to reduce the potential for additional stress.. Your cat's response will dictate the options available to your groomer.

Most cat clients receive lion cuts for health reasons. These include removing mats (knots), senior cats unable to groom themselves, or to help reduce shedding and allergies in the home.

Aesthetic only grooming is possible but cannot be guaranteed due to the unpredictable and challenging nature of cat grooming. This is not an excuse to send home half-shaved cats (extremely rare), or cats that don't look nice, we simply want to communicate the challenges of cat grooming and our practical, health-first approach.

Sanitary Shaving

If you don't want your cat to receive a full lion cut, but your cat has some matting or sanitary challenges in their private areas and/or belly, we may be able to perform just a sanitary shave and/or belly shave.

As these are the areas that present the most difficulty, pricing will be similar to that of a full haircut.

Dematting

As per our general policies and waiver, we will not undertake significant dematting on either dogs or cats due to the potential for pain, stress and injury. Mild de-matting may be possible, however, shaving or a shorter style may be necessary. If your cat has matting in specific areas and you would like only those areas shaved, this may be possible. Same eligibilty rules apply. Important: where spot shaving is requested, pricing may be similar to that of a full groom depending on the complexity of the areas and response of your cat. We typically spot shave under arms, bellies and sanitary areas, which are the most challenging areas, needing more time to perform safely.

Other Services

At this time we do not offer any other cat services such as teeth brushing and ear cleaning.

Equipment

All cats must arrive in a suitable carrier.

We use grooming leads with both dogs and cats. This is a leash that sits around their neck, and is attached to the grooming table arm. This is for increased safety and control of your pet. Groomers are always 1 to 1 with your pet, and all pets at the salon are crated for mutual safety when not with a groomer.

Muzzles may also be used on cats getting any services if the groomer feels it's warranted. Almost all cats receiving a haircut will be muzzled as there is an increased chance of injury if they attempt to bite/attack any grooming tools (clippers/scissors). It also protects their whiskers against accidental trimming should they make a sudden movement.

Cancellations and No-Shows

Cancellations are required at least 24 hours in advance of appointment. Cancellations inside 24 hours or No-Shows will require full pre-payment for future appointments. Repeated no-shows will require full payment of missed appointment and pre-payment of new appointments.

Pricing

Pricing is provided as a guideline only. All cats have a unique response to grooming services, and we are unable to quote an exact price until we become familiar with your pet. All prices subject to applicable taxes.

Difficult cats, cats with excessive matting or soiled fur will incur extra costs. Typically $5-30 above our listed price due to the additional time and effort needed to resolve the excessive issue.

Rejected Cats

If your cat is rejected at our salaon, your groomer will explain the reasons why, and whether or not we think we can try again another day. In more difficult situations, we may only agree to see your cat again if they receive sedation, though still does not provide a guarantee we can perform any services. We do not offer sedation of any kind; this must be discussed with your vet. In some cases, a pill can be prescribed to help your cat relax. It is important to follow the prescribed directions to ensure it takes effect at the right time.
